Uzara combats diarrhea by slowing the movement of the bowels. In high dosages, its active ingredient uzarone acts like digitalis, strengthening heart contractions and steadying the heartbeat. Uzara is native to South Africa, where it is a traditional remedy for diarrhea and dysentery. The dried roots of 2- to 3-year-old plants are used medicinally.
Each dose should supply the equivalent of 1 gram of the herb, which will deliver approximately 75 milligrams of the active ingredient uzarone. The total recommended daily dosage of uzarone is 45 to 90 milligrams.
